Dance classes are a great way for your child to develop a new skill they’ve taken an interest in, participate in an engaging physical activity, and potentially meet some new friends along the way. It can be a great extra-curricular or summer activity with the potential to expand into a true passion later in your child’s life, if they stick with it long enough.

There are quite a few things you and your child should keep in mind before they sign up for dance classes, though, to make sure they truly are getting involved in something they’re interested in without committing to something they don’t feel truly drawn to. This largely comes down to doing your research before spending any of your money, and if you’re here, you’re in the right place for that.

The Landing Dance Centre offers dance classes in Vancouver, BC for all age groups. Although this blog post mainly focuses on things to keep in mind when your child has taken an interest in dance classes, the tips written here are useful to people of any age, as their main focus is just to help you make the most informed decision possible before signing up for classes.

In this article, the specific tips we’ll cover include the genres of dance classes you can choose from, booking a trial class before making a longer commitment, and providing information about advanced training programs like those found at the Landing Dance Centre.

There are several different genres of dance to choose from

At the Landing Dance Centre, we offer general classes for seven different genres of dance. These include:

  • Ballet
  • Tap
  • Jazz
  • Modern
  • Contemporary
  • Acro
  • Hip hop

You can read more about any or all of these genres and classes on our Classes page. Each of our dance classes, regardless of genre, is led by skilled instructors with experience teaching students at every skill level. All of our classes are available at beginner and advanced levels.

If your child is already certain about their interest in dance and ready to turn it into a dedicated passion, you may also be interested in our advanced training programs, which you can learn more about here. We offer four of these programs for dancers of any age or skill level.

You can book a trial class first

Before actually signing on for a class long-term, though, you should know that you can book a trial class first to get a sense of whether a particular class or genre of dance is right for your child. In fact, it’s in your best interest to do this before spending any money, as signing your child into a class for a season or extended period of time may mean committing potentially hundreds of dollars toward term fees, costume deposits, exam/concert packages, and more.

A trial class is also a great opportunity to get a sense of how much your child is going to enjoy a dance class, or at least the specific type of dance focused on in the trial, as well as how the dance school actually manages and interacts with children in the class. If the school doesn’t actually let you observe what happens during the trial class, this is also your opportunity to determine how comfortable you are being completely hands-off with this activity.
